Maintenance Required

Really didn't want to make this blog a 'What I Hate About My Apartment' blog but things just get worse and worse.

There are 4 floors in the building, with about 5 suites per floor minus the first, where there's only 3 or 4. There are 5 tenants in each suite. On the first floor is the laundry room, which, to everyone's dismay, only contains 2 washers and 2 dryers. That's 2 of each for the entire building.

Tried out one of them once in September. That particular machine apparently was half-broken because it didn't go through a spin cycle. Clothes came out drenched and had to stand there wringing everything out by hand before tossing them in the dryer (which, thankfully, are fine minus that they're not that strong and need at least 2 runs to get fully dry clothes). A couple weeks ago, roommate notified us that that machine eats coins and doesn't work. Well, great. At least the other machine still works, right?

Dragged my stuff downstairs yesterday because I'm running low on socks. So one of the machines eats coins. Tested it out just in case. Wasted $1.25 on that. The other one had the side panel of the coin slot on the floor but otherwise seemed fine. Tried that one. Took the coins and started putting out water fine. Tossed everything in there and waited for it to start. When it started, it seemed to go really sluggishly and made a low grinding noise that it shouldn't have been making. Feeling unsure, decided to check back on it five minutes later.

Came back down ten minutes later or so, and at the corner before reaching the laundry room, heard a really loud noise. Ran into the laundry room to find the machine going like it had no breaker or something. It honestly seemed possessed or something since it was going at an abnormally fast speed for a rinse cycle. Fearing the worst, took out all the clothes (which were still sopping, of course, since it hadn't done a spin cycle and was still pouring out water for the rinse cycle) and wrung them out again by hand. Had to hand wash some other stuff. A good waste of $2.50 and a lot of time. My hands are very raw and sore now.

Landlord has been notified by email but no reply yet. Getting a bit ticked off about this. The nearest laundromat is a good 30 minutes away, and with the weather turning snowy soon, would prefer not having to go that far with laundry.

But such is the life of poor college students.

Zoooo

Went to Toronto Zoo on Sunday. Frustratingly and disappointingly forgot to take camera, so only had crappy cell phone for photos. Will post the few photos I did manage to get on Picasa or in the Gallery. The elephants were awesome. Same with the tigers.

Didn't realize how big it was until we got there too. Good thing it was really great weather. A little on the cool side so when we went inside the tropical exhibits it wasn't sweltering hot.

Apparently there's going to be a new Korean exhibit to be built there. Would be interesting to go see it once it's completed.

Update: Added craptacular cell phone photos to Picasa.

I'm with the (fake) Band

Mon, Oct 6th 2008 12:39 pm
Tried out Rock Band 2 on the weekend. Can't really see much difference except for the song selection (which could already be customized with online purchases) and the way the songs are organized. Actually, not sure on the last one, since I haven't played much of the first Rock Band.

Don't really see how much of a difference there actually is between the two. Would it be worth the extra $30-60 just for the preloaded songs? Pretty sure most of them were already available for the first game for purchase.

But that's just me. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing some of Rock Revolution or Guitar Hero 4, especially the drums on those sets.

Weeeeezer

Saw Weezer in concert yesterday at the ACC. It was, in a word, awesome.

Opening bands were Tokyo Police Club (never heard of them) and Angels and Airwaves (only heard their name before). Didn't see much of the Tokyo Police Club set, but the Angels and Airwaves set was...well, seizure-ific. Frankly can't even remember their songs because they were pretty generic in a way, but the lights they had going were over the top. It was to the point where migraines were setting in. That somehow passed without incident though.

Weezer opened with 'My Name is Jonas' and closed with 'Buddy Holly'. Pretty wicked. Apparently the Edge radio station had a contest or something a while ago and got 30 Weezer fans to bring in their own instruments to play on stage with the band. There was even an accordion player and a dude with something called a 'melodica'. Oh, and a cowbell. The entire group plus band played 'Island in the Sun', and then 'Beverly Hills'. The cowbell got a solo in 'Beverly Hills'. They also had an Oasis cover, and a Nirvana cover. The guy from Angels and Airwaves even did a duet with the band for 'Undone (Sweater Song)'.

In the middle and during the opening bands, ten people in the row in front of us lit up a doobie and passed it back and forth and the smoke all somehow wafted directly to us. A couple rows in front of that, they lit up too. It was getting to the point where I felt a little weird at the end. Is it even possible to hot-box in an open area? At least one of the ACC attendants came and told the row in front of us to put out the joint.

Rock With RIM

RIM held a free concert today ("Rock With RIM") for UW students at Fed Hall. Up until today the band was a 'secret band'. Turns out it was Hedley. Not bad at all, for a free concert. Then again, considering it's RIM, it's probably no big feat for them. After all, last year apparently they flew in Van Halen for a free employees-only concert.

To be honest, haven't heard much of Hedley besides 'Trip'. They're not all bad. Kinda like the style. The lead singer is pretty good. Roommate tells me he was on Canadian Idol, which would explain a lot. They were quite into it, but it was a little bad since the crowd didn't really respond. At one point he even said, "Wow, must be a dry show." Most of the people were engineers though, which would explain a lot. Heh.

Got two free T-shirts and some ice cream too. Killer ice cream bar. It was so creamy and good. Oh, and glow sticks.

Wired (at last)

Bell guy finally came today! We have Internet!

There was apparently a misunderstanding somewhere along the line between us, Acanac, and Bell, so instead of coming yesterday, the guy was set to come today. One day off isn't that big of a difference, but it's enough to get us some money back, I guess.

Just got home so haven't put the 'Net through its paces yet, but probably more decent than regular Bell, at any rate.

Went to the Bomber with roommates yesterday (second night in a row). Had my first taste of tequila. Surprisingly it didn't burn as much as I thought (and heard) it would. Not bad at all. Whiskey Sour and Amaretto Sour are also very good stuff. Don't think the whole club-type thing is my cuppa tea. Interesting experience though. For the curious, no, I did not dance. I don't dance.

European Style

Mon, Sep 15th 2008 12:17 pm
Recently began to notice that Timmy Ho's is starting to add 'New!' labels to a bunch of very old items. On closer inspection, discovered that the labels actually say 'New! European-Style'. Maybe it's just me, but they all look the same, regardless of whether they are European-style or not. The croissants are just croissants, the danishes are just danishes, and the cookies are just...well, cookies. How do you make cookies European-style? Apparently I am missing a vital ingredient here.

Got a Maple-Pecan danish to test. Same sweet taste, same crumbly texture, same jelly stuff inside... I may not have the most advanced taste buds but I highly doubt these supposedly intercontinental pastries are actually flown in from France or something.
